Meal planning has been a game-changer for me. Before heading to the store, I plan out simple, healthy meals for the week and create a shopping list based on those meals. This helps me buy only what we need, reducing impulse purchases that often go to waste.

2. Shop Smart

I’ve learned to check the pantry, fridge, and freezer before shopping. Knowing what you already have prevents duplicate buys and encourages you to use up what’s on hand.

3. Store Food Properly

Proper storage makes a huge difference! I use clear containers for leftovers so they’re visible, and I freeze extra fruits and veggies before they spoil. I also invested in good produce-saving containers to extend freshness.

4. Love Your Leftovers

Leftovers are gold in a busy mom’s world. I intentionally cook extra servings of healthy meals like soups, casseroles, or stir-fries. We either eat them for lunch the next day or repurpose them into a new meal.

5. Embrace “Scrappy Cooking”

Using “scraps” creatively has been surprisingly fun. Veggie peels go into homemade broth. Overripe bananas become banana bread or smoothies. Slightly wilted greens are perfect for sautéing.

6. Understand Expiration Dates

Not all expiration dates mean “throw it out immediately.” “Best by” usually refers to quality, not safety. I use my senses — smell, look, and taste — before tossing anything.

When unloading groceries, I move older items to the front of the fridge and pantry and place the newer items at the back. This helps ensure that older foods get used up first.

When food waste is unavoidable, composting is a great option. Even a small kitchen compost bin can make a big impact over time.
