As at-home moms—whether we spend our days fully dedicated to home duties or balancing work and family from the same space—rest can sometimes feel like a luxury we can’t afford. I know this feeling very well. As a work-at-home mom, there are days when I am writing, creating content, helping my kids with homework, managing household chores, and still trying to show up as a caring wife and present mother. And as a stay-at-home mom, there are seasons when the mental load feels constant because everything seems to rely on you.

Through these experiences, one truth has remained steady in my heart: God designed rest not as a reward, but as a gift—and a command.

This post is a reminder, both for you and for me, that rest is holy, purposeful, and part of God’s loving plan for us as mothers.

1. God Modeled Rest for Us

In Genesis 2:2-3, the Bible tells us that God Himself rested on the seventh day after creating the world. God was not tired or overwhelmed—He was modeling a pattern for His children.

As moms, our days are full of pouring, giving, nurturing, solving, and serving. And yet, like our Heavenly Father, we are invited to pause and breathe.

Rest is not a sign of weakness.
Rest is alignment with God’s design.


2. Jesus Invites the Weary—Including Mothers

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says:

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

When Jesus spoke these words, He had mothers like us in mind—women carrying physical, emotional, and spiritual loads. Whether you are:

When I first started working from home while also caring for the house and kids, I used to push myself endlessly. I thought being tired meant I was doing enough. I believed rest was something I would earn once everything was done—which, as moms know, is never.

Over time, I learned something powerful:
My family benefits when I am rested.
I am kinder.
I am calmer.
I handle challenges with clarity.
I enjoy motherhood more.

Rest is not selfish—it is stewardship.
A rested mother is a blessed mother.


4. God Cares About Our Bodies and Our Well-being

1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. That means the way we treat our physical health matters to God.

Rest is one way we honor the temple He has entrusted to us.

Whether it’s:

  • taking a 10-minute micro-rest,
  • having a cup of tea alone,
  • sitting in silence,
  • stepping outside to breathe fresh air,
  • or lying down for a power nap—

These are not small acts.
They are spiritual obedience.


5. Rest Is a Form of Trust

As moms, we often feel that if we stop—even for a moment—something important might fall apart.
But sometimes, the deeper issue is not busyness.
It’s trust.

Taking rest says:

  • “God, I trust You to sustain my home.”
  • “God, I trust You to help me finish what I can’t.”
  • “God, I trust that I don’t have to do everything in my own strength.”

Psalm 127:2 says:

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for He grants sleep to those He loves.”

You are loved.
God gives rest to you because you matter to Him.

Rest allows you to shift focus from performance to grace.

• Pray short, calming prayers throughout the day

Even 10 seconds with God is rest for the soul.

• Delegate when possible

Even Proverbs 31 woman delegated tasks—she didn’t carry the load alone.

• End your day with God’s Word

Scripture at night brings rest to the heart.
